JMS Choir FAQs

Q:  Do you have to read music to be in choir?
A:  No, you can come to choir with no music experience.  We'll start at the beginning and before you know it, you'll be reading music and singing.  (If you are also in band, choir is pretty easy to pick up on what we do in choir.)

Q:  Do I have to be able to sing to be in choir?
A:  Whether you think you can sing or not, it's Mrs. Blankenship's job to teach you how to use correct vocal technique.  However, you have to enjoy singing :)  even if it's with the radio or in the shower!

Q:  Can you be in choir and be in athletes?  Can you be in choir and band, art, theatre?
A:  Yes, yes, yes!  Choir has students in athletics, after school sports, band, art, theatre, cheerleading, yearbook, B.R.A.V.E. and a ton of after school clubs and groups.  Choir works well with all clubs and activities.  We work with all teachers, sponsors, and coaches to solve conflicts in the schedule.

Q:  Will choir cost me anything?
A:  A JMS Choir t-shirt is required for your informal uniform.  Usually they cost around $10.  We also have a formal uniform.  You might have to put together a few things and we'll check out some things to you.  You'll be looking sharp!

Q:  How is Middle School Choir different from Nichols Choir?
A:  It's similar and different all at the same time.  You will still learn correct vocal technique, how to read and mark music, how to sight read, and how to use solfege and handsigns.  You will still have two evening concerts per year (one in December and one in May).  It's different in the competitions:  we compete as a choir at UIL Concert & Sight Reading Contest, as well as two optional contests for individuals;  we also take a reward trip at the end of the year.
