NJHS

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is an organization that recognizes not only academic achievement but other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. At Jacksonville Middle School any 7th or 8th grade student can become eligible for membership into the Honor Society. Students are expected to complete community service hours and be active volunteers at JMS.

Understanding the Obligations of Membership

Students who accept membership and are inducted into the chapter should be aware of the time and commitment involved with this honor. For example, there will be chapter meetings. The chapter bylaws should articulate the yearly meeting schedule and member attendance obligations. Members also must participate in chapter and individual service projects to benefit the school and community.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must have completed at least one full semester of seventh or eighth grade at Jacksonville Middle School for consideration.

Each chapter is required to publish its qualifications for membership, which is based on the five pillars of NJHS:

Scholarship

Per national guidelines, at a minimum, students must have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence. (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA.)

The second requirement for possible induction into NJHS is an evaluation by the Faculty Council on the student's leadership, service, character, and citizenship. The following requirements will be considered:

Service

This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation. This includes showing courtesy by assisting teachers, visitors, and students.

Leadership

Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. This can include :

  • Demonstrates leadership in classroom and homeroom

  • Demonstrates leadership in promoting school activities

  • Contributes ideas which improve the civic life of the school

  • Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility

  • Exerts leadership which positively influences others

Character

The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and maintains a clean disciplinary record. This includes complying with all school regulations (follows regulations concerning books, property, office, halls, lockers, and classroom).

Citizenship

The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has high regard for freedom and justice; respects democracy; respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels; and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in activities such as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs.

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is not a guaranteed right—it is an honor. Therefore, throughout the year you may want to focus on the above requirements and work toward a goal which will ultimately lead to possible induction into the National Junior Honor Society.
